Up there among those classic Michael Jordan performances is the so-called ‘Flu Game’, a Bulls/Jazz matchup in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals that saw MJ battling through illness to take home 38 points and send his squad to a 90-88 victory and give them control of the series. If you’ve been paying attention to these year’s post-season play you’ve no doubt seen the Gatorade spot paying homage to that special moment, a clip that has struck a nerve with at least one subset of its viewers. The Public Health Advocacy Institute is asking Gatorade to pull the promo spot, saying that it promotes dangerous physical activity in the face of the flu and also over-emphasizes the role of a few courtside sips of Gatorade in MJ’s success. Truth be told the add speaks to the resilience of one mighty man more than it tells the rest of us to do the same, and its hard not to stand up and fight for a moment widely considered as one of Jordan’s greatest.
